Learn more about Kerobokan's agricultural industry with a hike through its hidden rice terraces!

Get off the beaten track and discover a tourist-free Balinese way of life through its local agriculture, a unique ecosystem and a cultural tradition. By taking part in this activity, you'll be supporting farmers in the Kerobokan region: part of the tour fee will be donated to a local cooperative.

After meeting up with your guide in Kerobokan, you'll visit a local temple and your English-speaking guide will explain how the rice field cooperative and the complex workings of the 1,200-year-old subak irrigation system, which is still in use today and of huge importance to the local community.

You'll then set off on a two to three-kilometre hike through the Kerobokan rice terraces, using the low walls as a path. You'll cross rivers and carefully navigate the bamboo bridges built by farmers to get from one paddy field to another.

In addition to rice, the local farmers also grow fruit and vegetables: tomatoes, bananas, and aubergines to name a few. You'll learn how this ecosystem works in biosis with aquatic species that live in the rice fields, such as frogs, fish, crabs and snails.

You'll end your hike in a small café where you'll be offered fresh coconut water. Your guide can help you hail a taxi to get you back to base or your next destination.
