Take advantage of your stay in Quebec City to discover a unique sport: ice canoeing!
Ice canoeing is a truly unique activity: it's only practised in Quebec. It's the most original and safest way to go and play on the St. Lawrence River in the winter. Five boaters can take part. When the river isn't iced over, boaters move the canoe with the help of large oars, much like those used for rowing. When the river is icy, the oars are kept in the boat and the canoe makes its own way across the ice. With crampons on, the canoeists then take up the ‘scooter' position.
You'll be greeted by the team at l'Anse du Foulon, 10 minutes from Old Quebec. Your instructors will tell you all about the historical role of the ice canoe in the maritime links of the St. Lawrence. Don your specialist equipment and get briefed on the basic techniques and safety instructions.
Next, it'll be time to set off down the river. The route is adapted to weather and tide conditions. You'll have the opportunity to try both rowing and scootering. You'll be accompanied by your guides throughout the activity; they'll be more than happy to share their experience with you and adapt the activity to suit your pace.
At the halfway point, you'll take a well-deserved break on the ice. Savour a delicious pastry and hot chocolate prepared by a French bakery while admiring the breathtaking views. Being alone in the middle of the river offers a unique sense of freedom and serenity.
Next, you'll head back in the direction of the visitor centre. The guides will give you the photos and videos from your session.
Why not opt for the package including a moment of relaxation at the Strøm Nordic spa in Old Quebec? You deserve it! You'll have unrestricted access to the various facilities: open-air jacuzzi baths, temperate and ice baths, Finnish saunas, eucalyptus steam baths, and thermal and Nordic waterfalls.
