Descripción

Explore the traditional district of Asakusa on foot and, if you add the optional extra, take part in a Japanese cultural activity

Located on the banks of the Sumida River in north-east Tokyo, Asakusa is a district that has retained its traditional, local vibe over the centuries.

Asakusa's history dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868), during which Asakusa became an entertainment district, home to kabuki theatres and geisha houses. The district's development continued in the early 20th century: Asakusa is one of Tokyo's most famous districts, and home to a wealth of entertainment. Asakusa was partially destroyed during the Second World War but remains one of the most popular districts for foreign and Japanese visitors intrigued by its unique feel.

Its attractions are all within walking distance of each other. Accompanied by your guide, you'll explore Asakusa and discover its iconic landmarks. Stroll through its traditional alleyways, which bear witness to its rich history, and soak up its old-fashioned charm.

A highlight is the visit to Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple and Asakusa's emblematic site. To reach the temple, you'll head up the picturesque Nakamise shopping street just after you pass through the outer Kaminarimon gate (AKA the "Thunder Gate"). Take time to admire the gate's huge lantern and the statues of the deities Fujin and Raijin.

After exploring the area around the temple, you'll head to Kappabashi: this shopping street is lined with shops that specialise in kitchen equipment which they sell to Tokyo restaurateurs and the general public. You'll find everything here: ceramics, chopsticks, knives, and even reproductions of the resin food displays that restaurants famously display in their windows!

Afterwards, you'll return to the Kaminarimon gate where the tour will come to an end. You can continue to explore the area on your own.

Or you can choose to participate in one of the following traditional activities (optional extra, held before or after the tour depending on option selected):

Tea ceremony
Participate in an authentic 45-minute ceremony with a tea master.

Kimono rental
Wear a traditional kimono during the guided walking tour.
